A totally original Police Commissioner Sir Charles Warren GCMG, KCB, FRS, police commissioner of London from 1886-1888. Hand written and signed letter with authentic Victorian Police Bullseye lantern. The letter is dated 22.12.23 indicating that this was written in the year of 1923. Sir Charles Warren hand written letter and hand signed in ink which is bold and clear to the bottom of the letter. The letter has embossed address: The Oaks, Canterbury which was his home at this time. The related Sir Charles Warran signature to Jack the Ripper is quite important as Sir Charles Warren was the Chief Commissioner and oversaw the Jack The Ripper investigation during the period of the Whitechapel Murders in 1888. Sir Charles Warrens daily duty would have been to oversee all aspects of the investigation and liaised with the Prime Minister and Queen Victoria, unfortunately his term as commissioner would prove to be an extremely stormy one, marked by several PR disasters such as Bloody Sunday in November 1887 and his forces inability to solve the Jack The Ripper murders of 1888 he was forced to resign the day before the murder of Mary Jane Kelly but agreed to stay in his post until 1st December 1888. He was also controversial for the removal of the graffito in Goulston Street in October 1888. His signature is avidly collected. The set comprises of his hand signed letter and an original authentic bullseye lantern which was carried by police officers serving during the period and they would have used such lanterns in the dimly lit streets of Whitechapel, London, in their search for Jack the Ripper. A very nice together related set to the commissioner and of the times he reigned.
The set in no way glories the murders of 1888 it is a sincere memorial to the women and the victims and to the policemen who wanted to protect them.
