King James was the son of Mary Queen of Scots, and a great-great-grandson of Henry VII, King of England and Lord of Ireland, and thus a potential successor to all three thrones! He acceded to the Scottish throne at the age of just thirteen months, after his mother was forced to abdicate in his favour. Although his mother was a Catholic, James was brought up as a Protestant. Four regents governed during his minority, which ended officially in 1578, though he did not gain full control of his government until 1583. In 1589, he married Anne of Denmark. Three of their children survived to adulthood: Henry Frederick, Elizabeth, and Charles. In 1603,
King James’s mother Mary Queen of Scots was convicted of treason against Queen Elizabeth I and beheaded.

James succeeded his cousin Elizabeth I, the last Tudor monarch of England and Ireland, who died childless. He continued to reign in all three kingdoms for 22 years, a period known as the Jacobean era, until his death in 1625. the three realms) from 1603, returning to Scotland only once, in 1617, At 57 years and 246 days, James's reign in Scotland was the longest of any Scottish monarch. He achieved most of his aims in Scotland but faced great difficulties in England, including the famous Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and conflicts with the English Parliament. Shakespear’s Macbeth was largely influenced by James I, who’s patronage was crucial to Shakespear’s Company, The Kings men which performed frequently at court.

Gunpowder Plot in 1605

The Gunpowder Plot was a conspiracy by a group of English Catholics, including Guy Fawkes, to assassinate King James I and the Parliament on November 5, 1605. The plan was to blow up the Houses of Parliament using barrels of gunpowder hidden beneath the building. Guy Fawkes was the one tasked with igniting the explosives. The plot was discovered before it could be carried out and Guy Fawkes was arrested, the perpetrators were later hung drawn and quartered. In the UK November 5TH still celebrates the plot being foiled by firework displays and hot chocolate and roast potatoes also the famous saying (remember remember the 5th of November).
