FIDEL CASTRO
Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz al 13 August 1926 - 25 November 2016 was a Cuban revolutionary and politician who was the leader of Cuba from 1959 to 2008, serving as the prime minister of Cuba from 1959 to 1976 and president from 1976 to 2008. Ideologically a Marxist-Leninist and Cuban nationalist, he also served as the first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba from 1965 until 2011. Under his administration, Cuba became a one-party communist state; industry and business were nationalized, and socialist reforms were implemented throughout society.
The CIA
The CIA attempted to assassinate Fidel Castro multiple times between 1960 and 1965, with at least eight attempts confirmed by the 1975 Church Committee. These attempts included elaborate schemes, such as using exploding cigars, poison-laced fountain pens, and even seeking help from the Mafia. Additionally, Cuban exiles, sometimes with CIA support, also attempted to kill Castro, with some attempting it multiple times.
The Bay of Pigs Invasion
The Bay of Pigs Invasion (Spanish: Invasión de Bahía de Cochinos, sometimes called Invasión de Playa Girón or Batalla de Playa Girón after the Playa Girón) was a failed military landing operation on the southwestern coast of Cuba in April 1961 by the United States of America and the Cuban Democratic Revolutionary Front (DRF), consisting of Cuban exiles who opposed Fidel Castro's Cuban Revolution, clandestinely and directly financed by the U.S. government. The operation took place at the height of the Cold War, and its failure influenced relations between Cuba, the United States, and the Soviet Union.
Cuban Missile Crisis
The "Fidel Castro standoff" generally refers to the Cuban Missile Crisis, a tense 13-day confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union in 1962. The crisis stemmed from the Soviet Union's deployment of nuclear missiles in Cuba, a location just 90 miles off the coast of the United States. This standoff put the world on the brink of nuclear war and is considered one of the most dangerous moments of the Cold War.
