A very nice original framed hand signed letter dated 1843 signed in the Duke of Wellingtons hand to the bottom WELLINGTON, Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington 1769-1852. Autograph Letter Signed Wellington to Lord Monteagle, 1-page 8vo with integral endorsed leaf a little soiled, small split professionally repaired, London 18 January 1843. Telling him that Wellington had ordered and received the Pamphlet to which you refer. Thomas Spring Rice, first Baron Monteagle of Brandon 1790-1866, politician had become a rather ineffective chancellor of the exchequer in 1835, but resigned the office in 1839. The letter is nevertheless, addressed to him at Exchequer Chambers. The endorsement (in Monteagle's hand) reads D of Wellington 14 Jny 1843 Sale of Ld Wellesleys books. Richard, Marquess Wellesley (1760-1842), at one time governor-general of Bengal, Wellington's eldest brother, had died on 26 September the previous year at the age of eighty-three. A very nice example this professional black framed signature under UV protective glass, with matt photos of the Duke of Wellington, the Battle of Waterloo along with a small description.
