WWII SS GERMAN SILVER HALLMARKED PRESENTATION SALVER TO INFAMOUS SS OFFICER JULIAN SCHERNER DATED 1936

Large German Solid Silver SS Presentation Salver dedicated to high-ranking member of the SS Julian Scherner depicted in the film Schindler’s List. Finely engraved to the centre IHREM KAMERADEN SS STANDARTENFUHRER SCHERNER, BRESLAU DEN 15.1M HORNUNG 1936. Accompanying the presentation script there are 16 individual signatures, we have not been able to identify them would make a great research project, one could presume they are SS officers to Standartenfuhrer Scherner. Julian Scherner was born September 1895 and died April 28th 1945 he was an NSDAP Official and High-Ranking member of the SS, he served as SS and Police Leader of Krakow in German occupied Poland, he also held many other offices. Scherner was a WWI soldier and made Officer rank in 1914 and was subsequently wounded and captured at the end of WWI by French soldiers, he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class and a wound badge in black. In 1920 he joined Freikorps Oberland, joined the SS on 28th December 1932 and became a full-time officer in June 1934. He commanded the SS training camp at Dachau between October 1937 and March 1940, was Regimental Commander of the (SS Mountain Troop Regiment 11 Reinhard Heydrich) and was the Commander of the infamous (8 Totenkopf Standarte) and Garrison Commander of the SS in Prague. In August 1941 Scherner was appointed SS and Police Leader in German occupied Krakow, he was heavily involved in the murder and deportation of Jews and others, he also commanded police battalions during the destruction of the Krakow Ghetto. Scherner was responsible for the deportation to the Belzec extermination camp, the mass shootings in Tarnow and all evacuations that took place during his time there, he liquidated the Krakow Ghetto by deporting the remaining inhabitants were deported to Auschwitz. Interestingly, Scherner’s career was peppered with questions of corruption and as late as October 1944, he was demoted from SS Oberfuhrer der Reserve in the Waffen SS to SS Hauptsturmfuhrer der reserve and transferred to the Dirlewanger Brigade formally the 36th Waffen Grenadier Divion of the SS. He was found dead shortly before the end of the war in a wooded area in southern Poland under unknown circumstances. Scherner was a very nasty individual; his life was portrayed by Actor Andrzej Seweryn in the famous movie Schindler’s List. The tray is double hallmarked to the reverse rim. SIZE 330MM circumference. Hallmarked 830 by Gerhardt Hillman of Breslau. Has some scratching to the front and reverse due to genuine use, overall, very good condition.
