LARGE VICTORIAN ENGLISH STERLING SILVER SEAL END APOSTLE SPOON 1890.

A very nice Sterling Silver Seal End Apostle Spoon made by Josiah Williams & George Maudsley Jackson, London. The spoon is made of a thick gauge of silver, has a highly polished silver finish to its entirety and has very fine finishing, it is un-monogrammed and free from personalisation. To the finial of the apostle has the dove of peace incrusted to the hat on the top of the figure, wonderful detailing to both sides. The Saw in the hand depicts St Simon. All in all, a wonderful collector’s piece. For the most part, these items were made individually for wealthy grandparents of the time, who would buy one spoon representing a baby’s "apostle" and would be their Christening present. These items would be used only by that person and it would be kept for life. The phrase "to be born with a silver spoon” stem from this tradition.
