It had a rich history spanning from its formation in 1881 through numerous conflicts, including the Boer War and the First and Second World Wars. A wonderful WW1 British soldiers set indeed. "The Die-Hards" was the famous nickname of the Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge's Own) during WWI. The regiment raised 44 battalions and served across the Western Front, Gallipoli, and Italy. Tragically, they suffered 12,694 casualties, a sacrifice commemorated at a prominent memorial in Mill Hill. The Queen's Regime... Origin of the Name: The nickname originated long before WWI at the Battle of Albuera in 1811 during the Peninsular War. When the 57th Regiment of Foot was being decimated, their commander, Colonel William Inglis, lay wounded and rallied his men by yelling, "Die hard, 57th, die hard!" WWI Service: Throughout the Great War, the Middlesex Regiment expanded massively, absorbing regular, territorial, and service battalions (such as the 1st, 2nd, 16th Public Schools, and 17th Football Battalions. They fought fiercely in almost every major British engagement, including the Battle of the Somme, Passchendaele, and the Hindenburg Line. Heroism: Embodying their historic namesake, members of the regiment showed tremendous bravery. Notably, 2nd Lieutenant Rupert Hallowes was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross in 1915 after repeatedly rallying his men with the cry, "Men, we can only die once: if we have to die, let us die like men — like Die-Hards."Bracelet Hallmarks: Makers Mark R.P for Robert Pringle, Date Letter S 1917 Lion .925 Sterling Silver Finest, anchor Birmingham.
